Preserving a piece of US Maritime History - invaluable

The USS Olympia is a cruiser that fought in the Spanish American War in 1898 and has been preserved in Philadelphia. She's a one of a kind ship, a national historic monument, and in danger. She needs approximately $10-15 million in repairs to keep her a viable museum for years to come. If you have the resources, or connections to those resources, please consider helping. (full disclosure - there is no financial benefit to me to ask the question - we need to save this ship for posterity). Please contact me at 612-599-1935 or bdskon@fedex.com if you have additional questions.

USS RANGER CV 4 - a great name in US Navy History

USS Ranger (CV-4) at Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia, 7 June 1934. Photographed from a U.S.A.A.C Plane. NHHC Photograph Collection, NH 93546.

On 26 September 1931, the keel to USS Ranger (CV 4) was laid at Newport News, Virginia. She was the first US Navy ship designed and constructed as an aircraft carrier. Amongst her many notable duties during World War II, she provided air cover for Operation Torch (the North African Invasion) in November 1942 and Operation Leader (raid on German shipping at Norway) in October 1943. Following training and aircraft transportation duty in early 1944, Ranger was overhauled and sent to the Pacific, where she prepared air groups for combat operations. In October 1946, she was decommissioned and was sold for scrapping in January 1947.26 Sep 1931: Keel to USS Ranger (CV 4) was laid (8 photos)
