Preserving a piece of US Maritime History - invaluable

The USS Olympia is a cruiser that fought in the Spanish American War in 1898 and has been preserved in Philadelphia. She's a one of a kind ship, a national historic monument, and in danger. She needs approximately $10-15 million in repairs to keep her a viable museum for years to come. If you have the resources, or connections to those resources, please consider helping. (full disclosure - there is no financial benefit to me to ask the question - we need to save this ship for posterity). Please contact me at 612-599-1935 or bdskon@fedex.com if you have additional questions.

Navy Names Littoral Combat Ships Jackson and Montgomery

Oops............If you note in this story 'Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced today that the next two Freedom-class littorial combat ships (LCS) to be built in Alabama will be named the USS Jackson and the USS Montgomery.'

Anyone, anyone can pick out the error in that article?.........That's right - it's the Independence-class LCS that is built in Alabama.

Story of a Fighter Pilot: The Story of Cadet Matthew Joseph La Porte

http://blog.projectwhitehorse.com/the-intersection/v-sheepdogs-and-white-horses/2-story-of-a-fighter-pilot-the-story-of-cadet-matthew-joseph-la-porte/

"Mathew Joseph La Porte, Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets – Air Force ROTC scholarship – never got the chance to be an Air Force fighter pilot, but if a German Ace – Adolf Galland (104 aerial victories) – is a credible source to correctly define the breed – "the spirit of attack born of a brave heart" – then Cadet La Porte's death on April 16, 2007 was that of a true fighter pilot in every sense."

Stern dock U-turn for US amphibious ships (they mean well deck)

'The design of the America-class amphibious assault ship is to be amended to include a stern dock in the third-of-class and subsequent vessels, a senior US Navy official told Congress on 16 March. Sean J Stackley, the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition, told the House Armed Services subcommittee for Seapower and Expeditionary Forces that the service intends to "return to a well deck" in its amphibious flat-tops'.

Naval Forces News Brief from Jane's

Not sure this is news.....but will they change the class of ships simply because a well deck was added?

Western, Arab Warplanes Converge on Italy for Libya Mission - Defense News

More airplanes.............If it's going to happen, everyone needs to pitch in.

I've already read other blogs that stated only we could have 'punched the door in', and set the table for our allies. I agree with that statement.

Another under reported issue is USS Florida SSGN - the first time one of our former ballistic missle submarines engaged in combat.

This is the USS Bataan LHD 5 as a Harrier Carrier in Iraqi Freedom.

Navy, Marine Corps Aircraft Strike Libya

Navy, Marine Corps Aircraft Strike Libya

USS Kearsarge appears to be a Harrier carrier!

What I want to know is this - if its the right thing to do to use Harriers off the Kearsarge, which is in effect carrier aircraft, why not bring the whole airwing over from Enterprise, and finish it off.

There are just 6-7 Harriers on the Kearsarge.  Very good aircraft, very good pilots, very good 'punch' they provide, but just those few.  The airwing from Enterprise would've ended this in 24 hours.

This is the limited warfare that the current administration believes in.  You go in to win, or not at all.
