Preserving a piece of US Maritime History - invaluable

The USS Olympia is a cruiser that fought in the Spanish American War in 1898 and has been preserved in Philadelphia. She's a one of a kind ship, a national historic monument, and in danger. She needs approximately $10-15 million in repairs to keep her a viable museum for years to come. If you have the resources, or connections to those resources, please consider helping. (full disclosure - there is no financial benefit to me to ask the question - we need to save this ship for posterity). Please contact me at 612-599-1935 or bdskon@fedex.com if you have additional questions.

Ex-Bush official: Don’t show bin Laden images - Navy News News from Afghanistan & Iraq - Navy Times

I'm on the fence here........there are benefits, there are drawbacks to doing this.......

Sounds like I'm a politician, can't take a stand...............let's just say this, I'm convinced they got him. I don't need the pictures to prove that to me. So personally, I could care less if they do it.

The Obama administration gets credit for doing this, the Bush Administration gets credit for setting the table, and OBL is gone. That's all I care about.

And - I still want Obama to be a one term wonder..........he's still a socialist, and that isn't good for America. Even a socialist once it awhile understands that OBL wanted the US to get hit again.

Bin Laden buried at sea aboard Carl Vinson - Navy News News from Afghanistan & Iraq - Navy Times

Justice - because it was USS Carl Vinson that went to war in 2001 in direct response to what Osama had done. It is fitting that the last surface Osama's body ever was on was 4.5 acres of sovereign US territory, and that of a ship who fired the first shots in anger in the War on Terror.

Buried at Sea - Which Ship?

I hope that the ship the terrorist's body was buried from was none other than USS Enterprise CVN 65.

If you remember, on 9/11, USS Enterprise CVN 65 had just handed command over to USS Carl Vinson CVN 70
Just found this:

Enterprise was beginning her voyage home from the Persian Gulf when the September 11 attacks were carried out. Without orders, the carrier returned at flank speed to the waters off Southwest Asia near the Persian Gulf, outrunning her escorts. In October 2001, the United States launched air attacks against Al Qaeda training camps and Taliban military installations in Afghanistan. The actions were designed to disrupt the use of Afghanistan as a base for terrorist operations and to attack the military capability of the Taliban regime. Over three weeks, aircraft from Enterprise flew nearly 700 missions and dropped large amounts of ordnance over Afghanistan. On 10 November, the carrier arrived at her home port of Norfolk, Virginia, 16 days later than originally planned. During her last day at sea, the ship hosted a live two-hour broadcast of ABC's Good Morning America. Garth Brooks performed a concert with Jewel from Enterprise on 21 November while she was docked in Norfolk, Virginia. The concert was carried live on CBS.

And this:

On 23 July 2001, again with CVW-11 embarked, Carl Vinson steamed from Bremerton, Washington, bound for the Persian Gulf to support Operation Southern Watch. This changed abruptly on 11 September 2001, as the ship was rounding the tip of India. In response to the terror attacks on U.S. soil, Vinson changed course and sped toward the North Arabian Sea, where on 7 October 2001, Vinson launched the first airstrikes in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.[12] For 72 days, Vinson, along with Carrier Wing 11, launched over 4,000 combat sorties in the War on Terror, earning the ship the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. Vinson earned the Battle E and Navy Unit Commendation during this deployment.

And look who's out there now:

Ships Underway
 UnderwayCarriers:
              USS Enterprise (CVN 65) - 5th Fleet
USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) - 5th Fleet
USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) - Pacific Ocean

Once Commander, USS Enterprise had heard about the attacks, without waiting for orders - ordered a course change of 180' and went back, joined up with CVN 71 because both carriers knew that they were going to be the tip of the sword once military action was ordered.

In the next month, USS Kitty Hawk CV 63, and if memory serves USS Carl Vinson CVN 70 joined up to make one of the most powerful carrier tasks forces ever to be created, to bring the fight to the enemy.

  1. USS John F Kennedy CV 67
  2. USS Harry S Truman CVN 75
  3. USS John C Stennis CVN 74
  4. USS George Washington CVN 73
  5. USS Abraham Lincoln CVN 72
  6. USS Dwight D Eisenhouer CVN 69
  7. USS Nimitz CVN 68
  8. USS Constellation CV 63
  9. USS Ronald Reagan CVN 76
all saw combat in the war on terror.

A Personal Reflection

Congradulations to the US Navy Seal Team who accomplished this task!  Bravo Zulu my friends.  Hat tip, and tip a glass to you men.

To the families of the 9/11 victims, today justice was served, and it was important that justice was served on behalf of you and your family members who died too soon.  You were robbed of years of good memories.  You have my respect for continuing to live on - on behalf of your family members.  You have perservered, and overcome.

To the victims of 9/11 - I hope that somehow you know that justice was done.  You are all hero's, gone too soon, but know that you will never be forgotten.

God Bless the United States of America.

SECNAV: 11 carriers ‘about right’ - Navy News | News from Afghanistan & Iraq - Navy Times

SECNAV: 11 carriers ‘about right’ - Navy News News from Afghanistan & Iraq - Navy Times

Both Roughead and Mabus have recently cheered the capabilities of big-deck amphibious assault ships — the Navy has nine in commission — saying it’s akin to having an extra fleet of flattops. Mabus highlighted the role amphibious ships play in enforcing the no-fly-zone over Libya, an operation with air support from Marine AV-8B Harriers and helicopters but not a single flight from a carrier.

Wharf Rat says - I'm the biggest fan of LHD's out there.  It's accurate to say that it is an extra fleet of flattops, but Mabus is wrong to highlight the role of amphibious assault ship - there are just six Harriers on the flight deck.  If he really wanted to impact the no-fly zone, then put 26 Harriers on one, and then absolutely you would impact the no-fly zone in Libya.

Hand salute, taps, and a moment of silence. Thank you for your willingness to pay the ultimate sacrifice to guarentee my freedom.
